Stories and Testimonials

The stories below are typical of what we've seen over the years that Street to Trail has been running, and with the many groups of people we've taken out of the city.

---------------------------------------------------

“Street to Trail is an excellent idea. It promotes teamwork, communication,
and a healthy physical lifestyle. Experiencing all of this among the wonders of nature is an added bonus.”

The teamwork necessary for long portages
carries with it a real sense of accomplishment.

...with a new confidence developed through two day-hikes and the promise of a future canoe trip, they secured the first paid-work they had had in years.

“It was an awesome experience and has done wonders for me on many levels. I am currently bouncing around the hostel system, in recovery from substance misuse, and living with a terminal illness. So being able to contribute on this trip has done wonders for my physical, emotional and spiritual self.”

Far from the concrete and incessant noise of the city, a peaceful walk through the beautiful Hockley Valley can be real therapy.

Often, couples living on the street will come together. One week, a couple we had seen often in the city came along. In urban drop-ins, she is very quiet, while he usually does most of the talking. Recently, they had been particularly down on their luck.

Their bedrolls had been taken from them: they were sleeping at the side of the City Hall and their stuff was just thrown out.
Two weeks later, when the two of them came on a hike with Street to Trail, what a change there was! After the hike she jumped out of the truck, shouting to the world what a good time she had had, and he was hushed by her enthusiasm.

“This is something totally different than I have ever done before for New Years”, one person said as we were looking at the falls in the moonlight. This New Year's Eve, we are at Felker's Falls on the Bruce Trail. We started on the trail at 8p.m. and hiked for just over an hour. We see the Falls in all its splendour. With the moon glistening over the ice of the falls and the snow dusting the escarpment, this tranquil and serene place is perfect for praying and reflecting upon the coming year.
